So...the distribution continues. We've handed out close to 1000 nets in the Koros Sub-County in Northern Uganda!! We've run distribution days in 4 parishes within the sub-county and we've provided in-house installation in 3 parishes. The good news is that our team, consisting of TAMTAMers and workers at Kairos, our partner org, have become a well-oiled machine!
Spending more time in the field has highlighting challenges and opportunities facing this region. Alcoholism is definitely a challenge. We've encountered several men who were falling over themselves at 1pm in the afternoon. Alcohol is extremely affordable as it is sold in individual-sized plastic pouches. Amazing enough, many people can afford alcohol while living on a dollar a day. Alcoholism definitely plagues many households in the area and, honestly, breaks my heart.
On the flip side, there is so much opportunities in this area. Much of the land is untouched, covered with brush, trees and weeds. Agricultural production could be significantly increased just by expanding farmed acreage. Moreover, production could definitely be increased on existing farmed areas. Everything is done by hand here! There are no plows, no irrigation...but fertile soil, pretty good rains!
